BSN Programs (ADN Bridge)

Transitioning from an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a great career step for nurses who are interested in moving up the chain of command and having more control over the type of work they do in their nursing careers.

My Degree and What It’s Good For

An ADN takes less time to complete, and is less in depth than a BSN program, so while the ADN may help with getting a similar entry level job right out of school, long term options will be limited for nurses who are unwilling to upgrade their degrees. Continuing from an ADN to a BSN via a bridge program may take two or more years, but will result in more career growth opportunities and probably a better paycheck.

While someone with an ADN might be able to get a job as a Registered Nurse (RN), it is also possible they would end up working as a Licensed Practicing Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). These are viable and respectable paths within nursing, but they earn about $20,000 less than RNs (BLS.gov), so for nurses who are willing and able to make the leap to a BSN, it is a worthwhile investment.

My Earning Potential

The typical career path for someone with a BSN is to work as an RN for a few years, then return to school for a master’s degree if necessary to pursue a nursing specialty. RNs earn a median salary of $64,690 annually, and the field is predicted to see 26% job growth by 2020, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, so entry level jobs for BSNs should be plentiful in coming years.

Online ADN to BSN Programs
