RN Programs (LPN/LNV Bridge)

The common registered nursing bridge program is defined by relevant work experience or prior coursework or certification. For many certified licensed practical nurses or licensed vocational nurses, that certification/registration is the benchmark – and often an admission requirement – needed to apply to an Associate of Science in nursing (ASN) or a Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) degree. The typical BSN program includes courses in microbiology, general psychology, information technology literacy, nursing leadership, nursing care of adults and nursing care of families in stress and crisis, among other offerings.

My Degree and What It’s Good For

An ASN or BSN is the first step toward not only becoming a registered nurse, but also short- and long-term earning potential and professional advancement. Opportunities down the line may include serving as a nurse practitioner – often considered, in scope, similar to a medical doctor – or in a nursing educator role.

My Earning Potential

At the forefront of the most sought-after and fastest-growing fields today, registered nurses can expect job growth through the end of this decade to grow much faster than most other professions, at a rate of 26 percent. In addition, the median annual salary for registered nurses is approximately $65,000, about 30 percent higher than LPNs or LVNs. And registered nurses employed by hospitals tend to make more than those in other care environments – with the top 10 percent of the profession earning above $95,000 annually (BLS.gov).
